ROADTRIP PORTUGAL
Portugal, a land of beauty, cultural treasures, and welcoming people, awaited us on our recent road trip. Our journey began and ended in the vibrant capital, Lisbon, and we traced our route from north to south. Let's share our thrilling journey through this diverse country.
HEADING NORTH - FATIMA
Our journey led us north to Fátima, a significant pilgrimage site where the apparitions of the Virgin Mary were reported in 1917. The Basilica of Fátima impressed us with its sublime architecture and deep spiritual ambiance.
AVEIRO - THE VENICE OF PORTUGAL
Our journey continued to Aveiro, often referred to as the "Venice of Portugal." This charming city enchanted us with its canals, colorful boats, and delicious Ovos Moles, a local sweet treat. A relaxed boat ride on the canals and the exploration of the picturesque old town with its pastel-colored houses and pretty bridges made this stop an unforgettable experience.
PORTO - A CITY FULL OF CHARACTER
Our next destination was the enchanting city of Porto, where we spent two days. This city on the banks of the Douro River delighted us with its vibrant atmosphere, colorful houses, and the famous port wine cellars. We strolled along the waterfront, visited Livraria Lello (one of the world's most beautiful bookstores), and sampled delicious Portuguese dishes in cozy restaurants.
IGREJA MATRIZ DE SANTE MARINHA DE CORTAGAÇA
The Igreja Matriz de Santa Marinha de Cortegaça is a remarkable church in Portugal, rich in historical and cultural significance. This church, with its origins dating back to the 13th century, is distinguished by its architectural grandeur and its richly adorned interior. However, what truly captivates visitors is its photogenic facade adorned with beautiful blue and white tiles. These tiles, known as Azulejos, are emblematic of Portuguese architecture and art, adding a special charm to the church. The intricate patterns and motifs on the tiles narrate stories from the religious history and culture of Portugal. The combination of the blue and white Azulejos, the historic stonework, and the soft lighting surrounding the facade creates a picturesque subject for photographers and visitors alike. It's a place to capture the beauty of Portuguese craftsmanship and admire the history of the country in every detail.
A KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLORS - IGREJA MATRIZ DE SANTA MARIA DA VÁLEGA
The Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Válega is a remarkable church in Portugal, well-known for its especially photogenic colorful facade. The facade of this church features a captivating display of colorful ceramic tiles, traditionally referred to as Azulejos. These intricate tiles adorn the facade with vibrant patterns, including religious motifs that reflect the rich history and culture of Portugal.
NAZARÉ - WAVES AND FISHING ROMANCE
Our journey took us to the North Coast in Nazaré, known for its colossal waves and daring surfers at Praia do Norte. Here, we experienced breathtaking sunsets and savored fresh seafood in traditional restaurants. The charming streets of the fishing village and the relaxed atmosphere made Nazaré another highlight of our trip.
THE SUN-DRENCHED ALGARVE
The pinnacle of our journey was undoubtedly the Algarve. Dreamy beaches, dramatic cliffs, and picturesque fishing villages awaited us. We spent time in Lagos, Albufeira, and Faro, enjoying the warm hues of the sunsets and embarking on boat trips to the impressive caves and rock formations along the coast.
RETURNING TO LISBON
Our journey concluded back in Lisbon after discovering some hidden gems in the inland regions on the way back from the Algarve. We bid farewell to Portugal, enriched with unforgettable experiences and a wealth of photos that will always remind us of this magical journey.
