SEQUOIAFARM KALDENKIRCHEN
The Sequoia Farm in Nettetal-Kaldenkirchen, located in the Lower Rhine region of Germany, is a place of natural significance that presents unique opportunities for photography. This is a location where a diverse range of plant species, including the impressive Giant Sequoias, can be found on a 3.5-hectare site.
The history of this place involves more than just its establishment. In 1947, a devastating fire nearly wiped out the "Grenzwald" area, but efforts in reforestation were subsequently undertaken.
Two large Coast Redwoods were already present in Kaldenkirchen, and the visit to California prompted the cultivation of Giant Sequoias in larger quantities in Germany, starting around 1950. This marked the beginning of experiments in silvicultural cultivation of Giant Sequoias in the country.
In addition to these endeavors, cultivation of the Coast Redwood began in 1952. While these trees can achieve heights of up to 115 meters in California, their adaptation to the predominantly cool continental climate in Germany required selective breeding to enhance frost tolerance. Specimens on the grounds now reach up to 37 meters in height.
The Sequoia Farm is also home to the Dawn Redwood, a species once believed to be extinct and only known through fossils until living specimens were discovered in China in 1941.
The Sequoia Farm provides an array of natural subjects for photography, from the towering Giant Sequoias to the collection of rare woody species. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and capture its essence through your camera.
