INFRARED ALLGÄU & TYROL
MY FIRST INFRARED ADVENTURE: A WORLD IN RED AND TEAL
There’s a first time for everything, and for me, it was exploring infrared photography. Equipped with my modified Fuji X-A20, a 590nm filter, and a sense of curiosity, I ventured into the Allgäu and Tyrol to capture the surreal beauty of these regions. My journey led me to the Eisenberg ruins, Ehrenberg Castle, and the stunning Highline 179 — locations that transformed dramatically under infrared light.
DISCOVERING NEW PERSPECTIVES AT ICONIC LOCATIONS
Eisenberg Ruins, Allgäu
The hilltop Eisenberg Ruins, surrounded by lush nature, provided the perfect setting. The 590nm filter turned vegetation into glowing red, while the sky contrasted with a striking teal. The interplay highlighted the textures of the ancient stone walls, creating a surreal, dreamlike scene.
Ehrenberg Castle and Highline 179, Tyrol
In Tyrol, the combination of the modern suspension bridge and the historic castle was captivating. The bridge appeared ethereal and almost weightless, while the surrounding trees glowed vibrantly red, adding depth and dimension to the composition.
THE MESMERIZING INFRARED PALETTE
Infrared photography opens up a world of surreal colors. With the 590nm filter, trees and grass radiate vibrant red hues, while skies and water shimmer in rich teal. For example, the Eisenberg ruins stand amidst striking red landscapes and turquoise mountain backdrops — a truly alien-like transformation of a familiar landscape. Neutral tones from pathways and fences helped ground the composition while enhancing the fantastical atmosphere.
CHALLENGES AND FIRST LESSONS LEARNED
Mastering infrared takes patience. With the Fuji X-A20 modified for full-spectrum, focusing becomes a manual task due to infrared’s different wavelength. Post-processing is where the magic happens: colors are adjusted through white balance and channel swapping to create the iconic infrared look.
FINAL THOUGHTS: A MAGICAL FIRST STEP
My first infrared photography experience was nothing short of magical. The unique colors, surreal aesthetics, and breathtaking locations made it unforgettable. Infrared opens a window to see the world anew — maybe it’s something for you to try as well!
Feel inspired and explore the magic of unseen light.
